Services for Artists

Shisha supports artists and makers and works in partnership with others to support artists’ career development, for example through symposia, professional networks and voluntary placements. These nurturing relationships have resulted in a range of outcomes; from the commissioning of new work, residencies and exhibitions to representation in mainstream museum collections.

Often artists require a one-to-one artist session to help them plan their future career. Shisha’s Director and Deputy Director lead on this service, with support from other team members, which covers:

  • Artist Questionnaire/Database – the first point of contact for Shisha and Artists and makers, with information inputted onto Shisha’s database.
  • Artist Surgeries – an in-depth one-to-one meeting or series of meetings.  The surgery covers the artist’s work and career, potential routes forward and general advice.

In-depth artist support – responding to artist’s needs, this can range from marketing advice, applying for funds to approaching galleries. A successful artist’s surgery would result in:

  • Shisha learning about the artist’s practice and the artist learning about Shisha
  • An exchange of feedback
  • The artist feels more informed about how they can develop their work or career
  • The artist seeks new sources of funding and makes new contacts
  • The artist informs colleagues about Shisha’s work

As a key resource for artists, curators and students, Shisha stocks a small specialist library of South Asian visual art and craft publications. If you wish to use this facility please contact us.
